I just picked one up for $4.99 CND. I was expecting to pay $15. I'd say this was well worth the extra char slot, even if it won't be active until I have nightfall installed. I'm in dire need of a mule ^^

And about the preorder thing, I don't believe ANET ever said it had anything to do with preorder. They said it was a BONUS pack. Think of it like buying a prima guide before the game comes out.... only unlike the prima guide, the bonus pack is actually useful for something other than toilet paper.

Boy I really hope NC Soft gets this all sorted out as I would hate to see this as Nightfall release test run.

I Remember the RED ENGINE! RED ENGINE! with the Factions release and this situation is not helping my confidence.

Exactly! They specifically said that it was up to the stores to decide if they would use the bonus pack as a preorder or not.

The preorder is for your benefit, not the companies. It's so you can guarantee that you have a copy on the date that it's released. A preorder tells the company absolutely nothing about how many copies they will sell. There are many people that drop money on a preorder and never buy the game.

I understand that in the past people have received free items for preordering. But does that mean that they are obligated to provide us with free stuff?

There is a bigger picture to it and why they do it and i think charging for this bonus is bs.
since you missed it pasted all over the various forums here it is from the GW site itself stating this is a RETAIL package

August 1, 2006 (BELLEVUE, WA) — ArenaNet® and NCsoft® today announced a brand new retail package which will soon give Guild Wars® players their first look inside the exciting upcoming release, Guild Wars NightfallTM.
did you note RETAIL and NOT PREORDER?

Ummm, the way it works (or at least the way it has worked in the past) is you type /preorder and the items show up in your inventory automatically customized to whatever character you're logged in as. And you can do this over and over. So you can get the items, throw them in the trash, and then type the command to get them again. Theoretically, every character you have on your account can have a set of these items. Hell you can fill your inventory with them if you wanted to (by swapping them out to storage and hitting the command again, but never tried it cuz that'd be stupid)

They're automatically customized when you use the /preorder command. It doesn't really matter either, since you can use the command as many times as you want.

To be fair, not all stores are "charging" money. Some just make you "reserve" a copy, others will refund the price when you buy the retail version.

Not that I'm in a rush to get a pre-release item....I mean...really..its only a cd with some (8) music tracks and extras and booklet and a couple of free items and....and ...ok..so I lied..I do want it....and based on their press release on their own site, ANet wanted to get the package on store shelves by today. (they did use the word 'expected' so I will give them that) I had planned on picking it up today to tinker with...but NCSoft (as someone pointed out above) are the distributers, and didn't get the "word" out apparently. No one where I live knows anything about it. I did the "rounds" today just after 2:00 and hit every store I could think of using my own eyes (never can tell if the person on the phone is being lazy, knows what you are saying, or even really checking) and nothin. Ah...well...maybe for Guild Wars: Sunrise they will have this all sorted out. (I say get rid of the pre-release....make whatever you have to show us downloadable or something...)..... /sigh /pout

Best Buy here in Michigan said 24th at the earliest and they are only getting 10 of them.
EB Games guy number one: what the heck is guildwars?
EB Games guy number 2: Yeah that other guy is an idiot, it is coming in on tuesday.
Why is it so hard to actually release something on its release date? I can't remember the last time I was actually able to get any new game on release day without driving 4 hours to an extremly large city to find it. It's not like I live out in the country or something.....

Your Bestbuy only getting ten? yikes

I'm glad I got mine when I did. It was like an hour after the store opened, being a week day I didn't think I had to rush really, but there were only three copies left.

Well I just checked with Amazon and they say they are out of stock.

NOT ONE Video Game store in my area near Los Angeles has any clue what this item is. Both Gamestop and EB Games now tells me (in a call back) it will ship with my order on Oct 26th.

I have now called and checked over 35 possible video game outlets. You would think that in one of the largest cities in the United States of America you could find this item.

Anyone else pissed off about this cluster f#uk?

Heh it sounds like EB/Gamestop's canned line for anything that they don't know the answer to is "Uh... maybe that's an online only offer."

Would you like fries with that?

And yes, I'm a little irked. I'm in one of the geek capitals of the US here myself, you'd think people would have a clue. :P
